1. About Chichibu Paleo Express
The steam locomotive (SL) was once operated primarily in northern Japan by the state government. However, in 1972, SL services were discontinued. The idea of reviving the SL gained momentum when the Saitama Expo was held between March and May in 1988. Many people expressed their desire to see the beloved train back in action. In response, later that same year, the SL was reinstated along the Chichibu Railway Line, now known as the Paleo Express.
The name “Paleo” is derived from the ancient sea creature Paleoparadoxia, which once inhabited the Chichibu area around 20 million years ago, according to research.

Inside the train, you’ll find a selection of food and drinks available for purchase, so I highly recommend boarding with an appetite! Don’t miss the opportunity to try the special Bento lunch box offered on the train, a perfect treat for your journey.
