The best time to experience the stunning autumn foliage in Nagatoro is generally between late October and early December. Of course, the exact timing can vary depending on the year’s weather, but in my personal opinion, November is the most reliable month to catch the full beauty of the season.
This is also one of the most popular times to visit, with many tourists coming to enjoy the breathtaking natural scenery. The leaves in the surrounding mountains begin to change color from late October, reaching their peak around mid-November—when the landscape is at its most vibrant.
One of the highlights of the season is the view along the Arakawa River, where the fiery autumn foliage reflects against the rugged rock formations. This dramatic scene is often called the “Chichibu Red Rock Wall”, a name that captures the bold, vivid contrast between the crimson leaves and the natural stone.

If you take a ride on the Nagatoro Line Kudari (Nagatoro Traditional Boat Cruise), you’ll be treated to an unforgettable view of the vibrant Chichibu Mountains, dramatic rock walls, and the colorful autumn foliage beautifully reflected on the surface of the river.

Nagatoro’s famous Koyo (autumn leaves) Festival is held throughout November, attracting many visitors each year. One of the highlights is the evening light-up display in the local park, which runs from November 10th to 23rd. The illuminated trees create a magical atmosphere that’s not to be missed!

This special spot is also famous thanks to the renowned poet Takahama Kyoshi, who once stood here and wrote, “This is the moon stone where I must leave my poem.” His words capture the deep beauty and inspiration of the place.
During the festival, over 50 trees are beautifully illuminated, creating a magical and unforgettable atmosphere — perfect for an evening stroll or quiet moment under the autumn sky.
