Making perfect time to experience a traditional Japanese boat cruise in Nagatoro. Drifting along the river while enjoying the refreshing breeze is a wonderful way to escape the heat and take in the beauty of the season.
Wooden Boat on Arakawa River (荒川)
The boat used for the Nagatoro cruise is relatively small, accommodating up to 15 passengers. It is skillfully operated by two crew members (sometimes three), all dressed in traditional Japanese boatmen’s uniforms. Each crew member controls the boat using a single, natural wooden oar—an impressive display of balance, strength, and technique.
The Arakawa River originates in the mountains of Chichibu and flows all the way to Tokyo Bay. Stretching over 170 kilometers with a catchment area of approximately 3,000 square kilometers, it is one of Japan’s major rivers.
As you venture deeper into the mountains, you’ll find beautiful camping sites, rich natural landscapes, and fishing spots. Many visitors come to Chichibu for hiking, which is considered one of the true highlights of the region and a major reason to visit.
Nagatoro Line Kudari (長瀞ライン下り)—known in English as the Nagatoro Boat Cruise—is undoubtedly one of the must-do experiences in Chichibu.
The Most Famous Activity on Chichibu Nature
As this is a rafting-style activity, you may get a little wet—but that’s all part of the fun and excitement.
The journey begins on a calm stretch of the river, where the crew shares stories about Nagatoro, the Arakawa River, and the natural history of the Chichibu area. It’s a relaxing and informative start, allowing you to fully appreciate the surrounding scenery.
Soon after, the boat enters faster-moving currents, giving you the thrill of a natural roller coaster ride. Along the way, you’ll spot several large rocks that add a sense of adventure. Despite looking challenging, the highly experienced crew skillfully navigates the boat, guiding it safely through the course.
The Arakawa River is exceptionally clear and beautiful. If you wish, you can carefully touch the water and feel how refreshingly cold it is—especially enjoyable on a hot summer day.
The cruise lasts approximately 20 minutes, after which a shuttle bus takes you back to the starting point.

Easy to Access & Book!
The starting point of the cruise is very easy to access—just a five-minute walk from Nagatoro Station. Most ryokan and hotels in Nagatoro are also located near the station, making it convenient to walk to the cruise departure point.
There is no fixed timetable for this cruise. Once several passengers have gathered, the boat departs, so advance bookings are generally not required.
However, if your group consists of more than 10 people, it is recommended to make a booking in advance.
