Shibazakura, often described as a fusion of a lush lawn and cherry blossoms, creates a breathtaking sight each spring. These small, vibrant pink flowers blanket the ground, forming what looks like a vast, living carpet of color.
One of the best places to witness this natural wonder is Hitsujiyama Park in Chichibu. Every year, visitors from all over Japan and beyond flock to this famous ohanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot to stroll through the stunning floral fields.
If you want to experience the beauty of Shibazakura at its peak, now is the perfect time to plan your visit to Chichibu!
Access to Hitsujiyama Park
Chichibu is closer to Tokyo than you might expect! The Laview Limited Express, a sleek yellow train, runs directly from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station in just 80 minutes. While Japan’s train network can be complex, this express service makes traveling to Chichibu simple and stress-free.
Once you arrive at Seibu-Chichibu Station, Hitsujiyama Park is just around 1 km away, an easy 15–20 minute walk. And if you prefer a more comfortable journey, I can arrange a transfer for you!
Don’t miss the chance to experience this breathtaking pink carpet of Shibazakura when you visit Chichibu City!
Best timing for Shibazakura at Hitsujiyama Park
While Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms typically bloom from mid-March to early April, Shibazakura at Hitsujiyama Park blooms a little later. The best time to visit is usually from mid to late April, when the vibrant pink flowers are in full bloom, creating a breathtaking floral carpet.
In some years, the Shibazakura may last until early May, but by then, it gradually transforms into “Ha-zakura”, where the petals fall, and fresh green leaves begin to emerge—turning the landscape into a lush green carpet.
To catch the Shibazakura at its most spectacular, plan your visit between mid to late April!

Not only Shibazakura
Hitsujiyama Park is a vast and scenic destination, offering plenty to enjoy even outside the Shibazakura season. Whether you’re visiting with family or exploring solo, there’s something for everyone! The park features a playground for kids, tennis courts, and even a goat (Hitsuji) area, making it a fun and relaxing place for all ages. It’s also a fantastic spot for a leisurely walk or a peaceful picnic, surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes of Chichibu.
After a refreshing stroll, head to Seibu-Chichibu Station, where you can unwind at an onsen (hot spring). While the station’s exterior reflects a nostalgic charm, it serves as a bustling terminal with a variety of attractions. Inside, you’ll find souvenir shops, local delicacies, and a soothing onsen—a perfect way to relax before heading back to Tokyo.
If you’re visiting during peak Shibazakura season, don’t miss the Chichibu Local Market at Hitsujiyama Park! Here, you can enjoy delicious regional specialties such as Miso-potato, Waraji-katsu (deep-fried pork cutlet), and handmade soba (buckwheat noodles)—a perfect way to experience the flavors of Chichibu while admiring the breathtaking floral scenery.
