1. About the Misotsuchi of Icicles

In Japanese, these incredible natural formations are known as “Misotsuchi-no-Tsurara” — the massive icicles of the Chichibu winter season. As you head west from Chichibu City, you’ll notice the scenery gradually changing. The towns give way to mountains, the air grows crisper, and eventually, you’ll find yourself in a secluded, snow-covered landscape far removed from the bustle of daily life.

The icicles are nestled between two campgrounds, making this a unique destination for winter camping. Yes, it can be freezing, but the experience goes far beyond the cold. Surrounded by silence, nature, and the towering ice formations, it’s a moment that stirs something deep — a quiet beauty that lingers long after you leave.

While there are several icicle spots around the region, Misotsuchi-no-Tsurara stands out as the only place where natural icicles form. Other locations may showcase impressive displays, but most of those are artificially created.

At Misotsuchi, although a small portion is supported by man-made enhancements, the majority of the icicles are entirely natural — shaped solely by the local climate and geography. This rare phenomenon can only be seen here, making it a truly special sight for those who seek an authentic winter experience.

2. Light Up Icicles!

The light-up event at Misotsuchi-no-Tsurara is a truly magical experience — but it’s also incredibly limited, running for just a few weeks between January and February each year. The glowing icicles under the night sky create an unforgettable scene that feels almost surreal.

It’s a rare opportunity you won’t want to miss, so if you’re planning a winter visit, be sure to check the schedule and catch this limited-time wonder while you can!
