Urayama Dam was completed in 1998 and began its operation the following year, in 1999. After the devastating typhoon in 1947 and a major flood crisis in 1967, the Arakawa River urgently required a dam to help control and manage future flooding. Today, Urayama Dam not only serves an important role in flood prevention but has also become a popular sightseeing destination in Chichibu. Known as the “Lake of Chichibu Sakura,” it attracts many visitors, especially during the cherry blossom season, offering beautiful scenery and a peaceful atmosphere.
1. History of Urayama Dam
To build the Urayama Dam, 49 households had to relocate, which made the negotiation process quite lengthy. In order to support the affected residents, the local government introduced special laws to provide compensation and help them rebuild their lives in new locations.
Thanks to these efforts, the negotiations, which began in 1978, were successfully concluded in 1987 — a process that took nearly nine years. Construction of the dam was then completed in 1998, marking almost 28 years from the start of the project. Today, Urayama Dam plays a vital role not only in flood control but also in supplying water to Saitama Prefecture and Tokyo, as well as generating electricity for Saitama.
2. How to Enjoy Urayama Dam Sightseeing
The dam is also known as “Lake Chichibu Sakura,” and in spring, visitors can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms along the walking paths surrounding the reservoir. Since 1994, parts of the dam’s interior have been open to the public, attracting many visitors who come to experience both the engineering marvel and the natural beauty of the area.
As one of the largest dams in the region, Urayama Dam is visible from several spots along the main road. If you make your way to the top of the dam, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of Chichibu City. There is also a resource room where visitors can learn about the history and construction of Urayama Dam.
Fishing may be available.

3. Access to Urayama Dam
If you’re planning to visit Urayama Dam by public transport, be aware that only a limited number of buses run each day, so it’s important to check the timetable in advance. Buses to Urayama Dam depart from both Seibu Chichibu Station (Seibu Chichibu Line) and Chichibu Station (Chichibu Railway Line), and the ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
For the most convenient option, taking a taxi is highly recommended. Taxis are readily available at both Seibu Chichibu Station and Chichibu Station.
If you’re feeling adventurous, hiking to Urayama Dam is also possible. You can get off at Urayamaguchi Station on the Chichibu Railway Line, and from there, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the dam.
