Stepping into this café feels like slipping back in time, wrapped in a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Tucked right in the heart of Chichibu, it’s only a five-minute stroll from Seibu Chichibu Station, making it an easy and welcoming stop for locals and visitors alike.
I’ve been coming here since I was a child, and every visit feels like opening the door to a different era. The retro décor, gentle lighting, and calm, timeless vibe create a sense of comfort that never fades. It’s a place where memories linger — a charming spot to experience Chichibu’s nostalgic side while enjoying a quiet, relaxing break.

The café is called MOKUTEI (木亭), which carries the meaning of “wooden house café.” Tucked away on the quieter side of Chichibu, far from the main tourist routes, it can be a little difficult to find — but that sense of discovery is part of what makes it so special. It truly feels like a hidden gem waiting to be stumbled upon.
At first glance, MOKUTEI doesn’t even look like a café. From the outside, it resembles an antique shop, instantly sparking curiosity. Once you step inside and climb the staircase to the second floor, you’re welcomed into a space that feels like you’ve entered another era — an antique café in the truest sense.
The warm wooden interior, gentle lighting, and nostalgic decorations create an atmosphere that feels straight out of a classic Japanese anime. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to pause, relax, and soak in the charm of a beautifully preserved past.
